The Ayleids were a group of people who came from a far away land called Aldmeris. They were a very powerful, immortal race who built cities called Ayleid Cities.

These cities had a very dark secret – they could not be destroyed by normal means. They were burned at the behest of the Ayleid people themselves, who felt that their home was too beautiful for this world to have it remain in ruin. In order to keep this kind of destruction from happening again, they decreed that no new Ayleid cities should ever be built after the first eight were built, and that any existing ones should be burned down after 200 years.
